What services can I expect from a Stockbroker?

A stockbroker is professional regulated by the Financial Services Authority, who buys and sells stocks and shares on behalf of investors.

There are three main services a stockbroker will offer:

Execution-only - the stockbroker will only act on the client's instructions to buy or sell shares or other securities.

Advisory - the stockbroker provides professional advice to the client on which shares to buy and sell and when, but the client makes the decision.

Discretionary - the stockbroker makes all share dealing decisions on the client's behalf having discusses the client's objectives and risk profile.

Investors may be private individuals, limited companies, charities or trusts.

Along with share dealing services, stockbrokers may also provide ISAs (Individual Savings Accounts), SIPPs (Self-Invested Personal Pensions) CTFs (Child Trust Funds).

Investors can buy shares from stockbrokers over the phone and in writing, but there is a growing use on the internet for online share dealing due to its speed and cost. Online stockbrokers may offer a flat rate fee for trades.
